Theatre Arts Background
Sound with Vision is our Theatre Arts Programme (SOlVe), created by Naz Knight in 2001 as a healing arts programme for individuals affected by domestic/sexual violence, mild to moderate mental health conditions and cultural deprivation.
Inspired by her own experiences as a result of of being a victim of domestic violence and rape; she combining art with holistic therapy’s. NRP began the Sound with vision theatre arts programme and its tandem project Abuse Victim Support project (AVS) that provides counselling and other services and the DArkness Makes SEnse in the Light project (DAMSEL) that provides healing arts.
This holistic approach includes theatre arts; encourages abuse victims and individuals with mild to moderate mental health conditions to participate in various art forms. Therefore providing a means of recovery and overcoming mental health conditions. Which allows them to re-engage in society, learn life skills, enter education and gain meaningful employment.
Scientific studies tell us that art heals by changing a person’s physiology and attitude; as a result the body’s physiology changes from one of stress to one of deep relaxation; from one of fear to one of creativity and inspiration, consequently leading to holistic health.
Our explosive blend of Sound, Colour and Movement, has engaged audiences in an experience beyond the stage performance for over 20 years. It is sound with a vision to inspire, motivate and entertain. Combining Spoken Word, Music, Visual, Cultural and Performing Arts to portrays age old philosophies in the vernacular of today.
Our Sound reflects Our Vision:-
“That each individual in society: irrespective of race, ethnic origin, gender, marital or parental status, sexual orientation, creed, disability, age, religion or political belief; has the right to be and to provide: inspiration, motivation and achieve emotional, physical, mental and spiritual well being.”
As a result of this ethos, they produced their first play “Earth Rise” . a two act poetry play. Earth Rise explored our perception of the world, from within and externally. The DJ/Poet collaboration blended multi-cultural singers, actors, dancers and musicians to portray 24 hours on a high street of a multi-cultural city.
“Colour” an ensemble play about the lives of 9 young people growing up in multi-cultural Britain; blending artists rather like in “Earth Rise” to paint a portrait of urban life as a person of colour. During this early stage, NRP worked with the Oval Theatre as part of the Hat Factories ‘Head Start’ programme to develop their DJ/Poet collaboration.
Especially relevant is their work in 2012; NRP provided DJ and Stage performances as part of Love Luton 2012 Olympic Flame celebrations and in addition; performed in the London 2012 Paralympics Games Closing Ceremony.
In addition, in 2015, as part of LAM under the UKCCA, NRP worked with Greta Mendez and Anton Phillips to work on an ensemble dance and spoken word piece “Metamorphosis” for LIC Carnival Gala. Consequently, this piece has been developed into the “A Life Interrupted” tour which will launch in 2018 – 2019.
